Methodological explonations
Azerbaijan Republic comprises Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 66 administrative regions, 70 towns, 239 settlements and 4272 rural settlements.
The data relating to population size and structure is based, for 1897, on the data as of February 9; for 1926, on the data as of 17 December; for 1939 and 1979, on the data as of 17 January; for 1959 and 1970, on the data as of 15 January; for 1989, on the data as of 12 January; for 1999, on the data as of 27 January; while for other years the data is calculated as of January 1.
Current calculations of population size are carried on the basis of the results of the latest census. The number of the newly-born in and arriving migrants during the year to the district in question is added to the district’s population size while the number of the deceased people and the persons leaving the district is subtracted from this size. The data relating to the population size thus calculated between censuses is further corrected on the basis of the results of the next census.
The data on the sex and age structure of the population size for 1926, 1939, 1959-1969 are based on total size of the population, while for 1979-2007 this data is based on the size of the permanent residence population.
Age interval brackets comprise the exact years indicated in such brackets. For example, “20-24” covers the five year interval including all 20 and 24 year olds, i.e. is the period from exactly 20 till 24 years of age.
Urban and rural population. Population is divided, by their place of residence, into urban population and rural population. In this regard, habitation points entered according to the existing legislation into the town category as considered urban units. All remaining habitation points are considered rural settlements. Urban units include cities, settlements of urban type and worker’s settlements.
Natural increase of population equals the difference between the number of the newly born and the number of the deceased. Natural increase is calculated on the basis of the original data.
Migration increase is considered the difference between coming and leaving.
Total population increase is considered the arithmetical total of natural increase of population and migration increase.
Total increase of the urban and rural population equals the arithmetical total of the natural increase, migration increase and numbers of those migrated to urban and rural units, as the result of changes in classification of settlement types (e.g. reclassification of urban units into rural and vice versa on the basis of legislative acts.)
Total, natural and migration increases may result in negative denominations.
